The weekend was quiet, a little too quiet in terms of support issues. Of course I don’t mind, but when it gets too quiet, I get nervous. Is it the dreaded calm before the storm? As I’m writing this, three RAID controllers are probably failing in the data centre.

I’m not usually a superstitious guy, but when someone says “no major support issues this week”, I tend to knock on wood.

Friday’s Kompisfestival was a success, me and Terje dominated the dance floor – or at least a couple of square meters of it. I’m not sure if you can call what we do “dancing”, but at least we’re having a good time and that’s the most important thing. The DJ was a bit of a moron who didn’t take requests. What gives? If we had come for the music and paid to listen to him DJ, I could have understood him, but the fact was that the organizers had paid him to play. In my head that means that he should take requests. Maybe he had a reputation to maintain, what do I know.

I have mentioned this before; when I’m with drunk people who don’t know me, they tend to suffer from the misconception that I look a bit like Edward Norton. It’s probably caused by severely blurred vision from the alcohol. It happened on Friday as well, and if I was single and a bit tougher, it’s definitely something I could have capitalized on – “capitalized” in this context meaning having an all right starting point for a conversation with someone of the opposite sex with the obvious goal of picking her up. But since I’m neither single nor particularly tough, it didn’t happen. Come to think of it, I never took advantage of women’s blurred vision when I was single either. Anyway, at around two in the night I decided that it was about time to get home to my bed and my sleeping beauty. It was a forty minute walk, but a long walk is a good way to burn some of the alcohol.

This weekend I also read about 40 pages in Revelation Space, which is starting to pick up speed, watched the Formula 1 race from Turkey, which was far less interesting and went for my eight run in two weeks, which was my best run so far.

Another weekend is finally here, a very welcome break from a work week that has been rather mad at times. I’m not going into details, let’s just say that I don’t like to get up in the middle of the night. A man needs sleep to function properly.

This weekend you can once again tune the idiot box to more Formula 1 action, this time from Turkey. I taped both of today’s exercise sessions, but have only had the time to watch one of them so far. The exercise sessions are usually kind of lame compared to the qualifying and the actual race, but there were a few spins – Ralf Schumacher spent more time turning his car in the right direction than driving it, I would be very surprised if this is not his last Formula 1 season – and David Coulthard’s RB3 had a fuel leak that caused it to catch on fire. Probably unaware of the engine fire, he continued around the track until the track marshals managed to stop him.

Interesting.

Tonight I’m attending the annual Kompisfestival. Not sure if I should bring my camera or not. Probably not.

No, not me. I haven’t been to a party in a while and I’m not really missing it. Either I’m turning to an (even more) boring fart, or it’s because work is hampering my mood and the need to attend any type of social gathering except for going to the movies. I’m hoping the latter is the case and I should do something about it.

New life with both socializing and exercise starts again next week. It’s a good time to start because the guys at work are starting to return from their summer vacations and I’m off support duty for at least two weeks. I’ve never been any good at this start-a-new-an-better-life-thing, though, if you have been reading my entries over the years, you know exactly how bad I am at it.

Someone in one of the first floor (that’s “ground floor” if you’re a fish and chips regular) apartments decided to have a party last night. They played some really, really loud music. There is of course nothing wrong with that – I might be turning into a boring fart, but I’m not a old fart yet. We heard the music quite well all the way up to our fourth floor apartment and when they started to play “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper over and over again, I was pretty sure it was the gay couple downstairs who had invited a few friends over. But it was not, it was just a stereotype failure by me.

They had all the music on a unit that made a beeping sound when they browsed through the music library. Not only was it annoying, it must also be one of the worst design flaws I have heard. A beeping sound is nice for audible feedback when you use an interface, but to have it turned on when the user it playing music sounds (pun intended) like a very bad idea. I think I identified the beeps as the beeps the Xbox 360 makes, but I can’t be sure because I’ve never used it for music.

And now for some more Formula 1 news. The drama after yesterday’s qualifying session continued into the evening. Both McLaren and Alonso were punished for the pit incident. McLaren would not be awarded any constructors’ points they might earn during the race, while Alonso was pushed back five positions in the grid and had to start from P6. McLaren was allowed to appeal their punishment, which they did, Alonso was not.

The race, you ask? It was a continuous yawn. Hopefully the next race in Turkey will be more exciting – but we’ll have to wait three long weeks for that.

Gine said it was the worst landing she’d experienced, I’m not sure if I can agree with her. It was a bumpy ride, and the pilot had a hard time getting the speed of the approach right, but I’ve seen worse. The real problems began when we went to pick up our luggage as no luggage was to be found anywhere. I expect that a possible reason for the problems was this:

All right. The last couple of weeks have been filled with flying, and this weekend I headed to Trondheim for Klas’ 28th birthday. It was only a short trip, I was away for about twenty four hours, but still I managed to get drunk and talk shit with Klas’, his brother Tomas and the other people who was there. They even had a free pool table! Beer, pool and good friends, can it possibly be any better?

I also got to meet Klas’ and Tomas’ new girlfriends. What can I say? Great girls for great guys.

Last week was hell at work, that’s the reason why you didn’t see any updates and that’s the main reason why this update is fairly short.

The apartment is starting to look like an apartment now. On Tuesday I got a replacement box for my messed up Amitech Media Center Box (more on that in later entries), on Friday I got my couch and living room table (four weeks before the scheduled date, which came as quite a shock) and on Saturday I even managed to buy a brand new TV. Not top of the pops, but at least it’s a new TV, the old one was out of the Media Center League.

On Saturday I went to a party at Ole’s place. Tons and tons of people I’ve never seen before, which is interesting. Finding myself in a setting like that I realized that I’ve certainly changed over the years. Just five or so years ago, I was your average wall flower. If you placed me in a room full of people I didn’t known and I probably wouldn’t say a word during the entire stay. Now it’s not really a problem, I easily chit chat with total strangers – even when sober! Of course, it depends on my mood that day, but I guess it’s like that for all people.

The reason for this new found glory is probably my internet dating career. During that period I became the undisputed master of small talk, and it taught me the great art of being able to balance the amount of listening time and talking time during a conversation. But, again, it of course depends on the mood.

On Sunday me and Gine took a walk around Sognsvann together with the bulk of Oslo’s population and on our way back I took this picture from the subway. It was extremely hard to hold the camera steady, but this picture turned out OK. It’s blurry of course, but that just adds to the mood of the whole thing. As usual, it’s straight from the memory card without any photoshopping. I also had a few picture of butterflies and water, but none of them made it through my online filter. Though luck.

The last party I’ll ever partly organize in U12 (it’s the shared apartment nick name) passed quietly by without any huge events to write about. People got drunk, talked about the life, universe and pretty much everything and went home.

At about half past five on Sunday morning, I finished Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Obviously not fit for driving after seven or so hours of drinking, I was perfectly able to finish a game I’ve been playing on and off for the last six months. Funny thing is that even if I’ve completed all the missions, I’ve only completed about 65 percent of everything you can do in the game. There is still a lot of things to do in San Andreas, but instead I’ve now started to play GTA: VIce City.

I’m a GTA junkie and I can’t help it. It’s just too much fun.

The observant visitor might have noticed that it’s now possible to reverse the sort order of the comments, a feature that was requested earlier. It’s nothing like getting up at seven in the morning on a Saturday to do some PHP coding. Seriously.
