You hear a lot of stuff about the environment these days. The polar ice caps are melting faster than anyone thought they would, millions of tons of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere as the Russian tundra melts and the plant mass decomposes, probably increasing the speed and effect of Global Warming. Some scientists have been warning us about this for a long time.
“It’s not our concern, when the shit hits the fan, we’ll be dead anyway.” This has been the general consensus. I have even heard parents with small children saying it and I found that somewhat surprising, to be honest. People in general have used the Ostrich approach and put their heads into the sand.
It didn’t work in South Park - so it won’t work in real life, morons.
You can do a lot of things on a personal level that will reduce the amount of manufactured energy you spend during the day, thus reducing the amount of green house gasses emitted into the atmosphere. One of those things is environmentally friendly browsing.

A quick follow up to my money-post. So far I’ve earned a massive $0.97. Not enough for me to quit my job just yet, but to be honest it’s more than I had hoped for. I guess that tells you something about my ambitions.
Next week I’m once again trying to get a week off from work. Last time I tried I got three or so days, this time there is a greater chance that I will actually get a full week since a lot of other people are going on vacation, too. But I would not be surprised if I have to get back to work on Thursday.
Like last time, I have no real plans for this attempt either but this weekend I’m spending a lot of time in front of the idiot box watching the Formula 1 British Grand Prix from Silverstone.

A while back someone suggested that I should get some adds on the site. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but eventually I decided to go for it. Google text ads don’t really bother anyone, they are relatively discreet, semi-relevant to the content of the page and I’d say accepted as advertising. They sure as hell don’t play songs when you accidently drag the mouse pointer over them.
Now for the question of money. Do I think I’ll ever get a payment from Google? Not really, because does anyone actually click on adds? I, for one, don’t and according to the agreement that Google made me sign, I’m not even allowed to click on the ads on my own site.
You, on the other hand, should click text adds until your index fingers hurt and I get so much money from Google I can quit my job and become a full time blogger/lazy bum. Right now there are no adds being displayed on most of the pages, the reason is probably that the AdSense crawlers haven’t visited the site yet.
While we wait for them to come over, what about clicking some of the adds that are already here? That sounds like an excellent idea to me.

One-liners,
Site News.
Here’s the list of June’s additions to the one-liners listing:
- “In mathematics you don’t understand things. You just get used to them.” — Johann von Neumann
- Marriage is grand; divorce, a hundred grand.
- Only users loose drugs.
- “Great thinkers have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds.” — Albert Einstein
- Whoever said nothing was impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.
- I’m trying to see things from your point of view, but I can’t get my head that far up your ass.
- There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.
- You laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at you because you’re all the same.
- If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0.
As usual I got a few new one-liners by e-mail, in particular after the listing was featured on I Am Bored. I was looking at my Google Analytics reports and noticed a large visitor spike on June 11, when the number of visitors to the site was about twenty times the normal number. From I Am Bored, the link spread to a few similar sites. In the last month, the one-liners listing has received about 74% of the total number of visitors to the site. It’s interesting when a tiny part of the site becomes the main attraction.

For quite some time now I have been playing with the thought of redesigning. There was nothing wrong with the old design - since it was very close to being a carbon copy of the site of a real web designer - but it’s healthy to give a web site a new look every now and then.
After reading Jason Beaird’s book “The Principles of Beautiful Web Design” I had all kinds of exciting ideas for the design: Badges, round corners, gradients and all the other goodies that make up a genuine web 2.0 design. Continue reading "New Look."
