Entertainment problem solved

Allrightythen… It’s been a couple of days now without any updates, shame on me for that. But sometimes I just don’t feel like writing, even though a lot of things happen. And one would think that me not having a TV in my apartment should equal that I would write tons and tons of stuff to pass the time. But then again, no. It’s not like that, it seems. Sometimes I feel like writing, even though I’ve got no time to do just that, and sometimes I don’t feel like writing, no matter how much time I’ve got on my hands.

I don’t miss the TV. At least not all the time. It’s easy to live without, it’s just one of those things you realize you can live without as soon as it’s gone. The only times I miss the TV is when I eat. For five years now I’ve been watching TV while eating food at home. Breakfast. TV. Lunch. TV. Dinner. TV. Eating food within an arms length of the remote. TV. So I need to be entertained when I eat. If not, eating is just plain boring. Luckily, my entertainment-while-eating problem was solved on Friday, when I finally received the books I ordered from Amazon.com on May 8: The Complete FreeBSD, Fourth Edition, Professional Apache 2.0 and Designing with Web Standards. All good books, and after reading the first two I’ll hopefully be able to host my site on my own server running FreeBSD and Apache 2.0. Good stuff. The only problem with books as a substitute for the TV is that it’s hard to entertain the masses with a single copy of a book. At least a technical book.

“Daddy, daddy, please read another chapter of Sendmail, Third Edition, for us tonight!” I don’t think so.

Why do I want to host my site on my own server? Control, ladies and gentlemen, it’s all because I’m an obsessive control freak. Having my site at a host has worked out all right so far, not including the occasional hick-up, like the POP3 and MySQL servers being down (it’s been a while since that happened now, knock on wood), and that they don’t use the latest version of all their software. I would also like to quote Limp Bizkit (and probably thousands of others): “If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself”.A few months ago I paid my host to register my domain for five new years. Even though I paid the bill and all, they didn’t do it right away, instead they wanted to wait until a few days before the domain lease expired. Fair enough, as long as they really do it. The domain has now passed its expiration date, and the domain lease has been extended, but only by one year, not five. What’s up with that?
