Giving the T68i a go
All right. I’ve now been working for four days and everything is progressing surprisingly nice. There might be a while before I get my first payment because they need my tax card and some other papers that I don’t have right now. I still don’t know how much they’re paying me, either. Not the most ideal situation, but I’ll live. I also have to start making phone calls to people I don’t know who are working in other companies to get hold of code I need. This is a bad thing since I just hate making phone calls - I’m more of a face-to-face kind of guy. But I’ll hopefully live through that, too.
Ola got a brand new Sony Ericsson T610 today and that freed up the test phone he was currently using, a Sony Ericsson T68i. I had a look at it, and it’s a decent phone, really. After a little fumbling, I decided to give it a try and I’m now using it as my primary phone. Like all Sony Ericsson phones, it is a tad slow, specially when reading messages and phone book entries from the SIM card, but as things get transferred to the phone memory, everything gets a little better. Still a bit slow, though, I guess it’s just something to get used to.
NRK is like a fortress when it comes to their network and firewall configuration. Because of this I’m unable to check mail through POP3 and send mail through SMTP, I have to use webmail. Great. Hopefully everything will get better when I get a network account. Right now I’m just highjacking bandwidth with a wireless network card they gave me, I have very limited access to anything in their network. The only server I have access to is the WAP development server. Which is also their live WAP server. With the risk of taking down their entire WAP service with the touch of a wrong button, I decided to move everything to my own Dell laptop and work on the code there instead, which works all right.
With the wireless network card I was able to do a Net Stumbler scan to look for wireless access points reachable from the apartment I’m renting. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any and that means no Internet at home for me. But there is still hope! The T86i comes with GPRS and it also has an infrared port. With a little luck, I might be able to connect to Internet with that, at least to update my site and check e-mail. It’s a long shot, but it might just work. You gotta love technology.
One of the e-mails I got through my webmail was one from a guy who had posted pictures from Partynett.com on his site, just like I’ve done in Entry #354 and Entry #355. Partynett.com had discovered that their pictures had found their way to another site and sent him an e-mail where they threatened to poor guy with a lawsuit and a $50 fine per picture if he didn’t remove them immediately. All right… Get over yourself, guys! You’re posting pictures of drunk, half-nude party-people. Besides, at least in my case, the pictures in the entries can be considered nothing but great publicity. The logo on the pictures was kept and every entry featured a link back to Partynett.com.

Hallvard: It’s been fixed now, but the version is stuck on V-Box until Monday.

Webmail isn’t that bad.. oh.. wait.. that’s right I’m hosting my own mail server so I get to choose which webmail server I want to use.. :)
