Handy

The iPhone arrived today. Thankfully it had the old 1.0.2 firmware so unlocking it was a breeze with this guide. The phone is lightning fast and has a lot of the features you find on other high end mobile phones, but it’s also missing a few:

  • I have not been able to send e-mail with attachments. You have to install a separate application for that. That’s crap.
  • There is no MMS support.
  • I’m not able to browse the filesystem from web sites, which is handy for uploading files through web forms.
  • Naturally, the iPhone is missing national characters and it’s not possible to see who’s calling you since the incoming number is formatted in the US format, which does not match the entries in the phone book. All this can be fixed with a little hacking, though.
  • For some reason, I’m not able to pair the phone and my MacBook.

If it had not been possible to jailbrake the phone and install 3rd party applications, it would have been fun for about 5 minutes. Now it’ll be fun for quite some time. Yes, there are tons of other handsets you can install 3rd party applications on without having to crack it first, but none of those handsets are as fast as the iPhone and that’s a huge pro.
