I Park Like an Idiot

Parking a car. There are a lot of ways to do it. I don’t have a driver’s license, but I still know the principles of parking a car, and probably would have managed even to parallel park eventually.

One of the things to look for is the markings on the tarmac or asphalt that indicates the spot where you should park your vehicle. In Norway, and I’m guessing in a lot of other countries as well, the spot is usually marked by two parallel lines on the ground. The secret is to park your vehicle in between and parallel to those two lines. In addition, your vehicle should be parked in such a way that it is confined within the area marked by the two parallel lines.

Still, for some reason, some people are not capable of doing this - even though they apparently have a driver’s license and should know the secrets of parking.

A double parked car.

While waiting for the bus yesterday, I noticed this Audi driver arriving at the parking lot by the bus stop. There are so many things wrong with this picture. First of all, notice the road sign you can just see to the right. The parking area is surrounded by a one-way-street, so you’re only supposed to drive around the lot in one direction. The road sign indicates that if you are going in on the road closest to where I stood when I took the picture, you’re going in the wrong way. It’s also easy to see by how the parking spaces are marked that you should come from the left. It’s quite hard to park in only one parking space when coming in from the right, isn’t it?

Yes, it is. This driver, who completely ignored the traffic sign and arrived from the right, solved the dilemma by simply parking in two parking spaces. Also the first three spaces on each side of the lot are reserved for electrical vehicles. This driver, most likely not driving a secret electric Audi, decided to park in two of them.

Of course none of this really matters that much. I can see that. There was plenty of room in the parking lot at the time and that the driver drove a couple of meters in the wrong direction didn’t create any dangerous situations. But still, how hard can it be to follow a few simple, basic regulations? I could be wrong, but this might be one of the reasons why many people doesn’t like Audi drivers that much.

I also feel obligated to mention that it was a female driver. True story.
