I’ll Be in the Bar

So the rain continued to pour down. What’s a nerd to do on his day off when he can’t go outside? He plays around with his web site, of course. At least that what this nerd decided to do. Here’s a couple of interesting changes that were made to www.vegard.net tonight.

  • I added a sidebar. Right now there’s not much on it, but now I’ve got somewhere to dump various stuff I come up with, or steal from other sites.
  • The server is now serving XHTML with the right MIME Type and declarations depending on the browser making the request. Browser like Opera and Firefox will actually parse the site as XML and refuse to display it if it’s not valid. It’s a pain in the ass to convert all of my old entries and content to valid XML because some of them contain character that are not valid in XML documents, but I like standards, so it’s a job I’ll probably do. Expect some error to occur, especially in the comments made to old entries. If you find anything, please let me know. An interesting side effect of the this new server feature is that Internet Explorer will display the site more or less the way it’s supposed to. Read the article Serving up XHTML with the correct MIME type if you’d like to know more about the trick used.
  • The Themes section is gone. Getting the sidebar to work properly was a bit of a pain in the ass, and I didn’t bother to fix the other themes. The section will probably return after the next redesign.
  • You can now use Markdown syntax when you add comments.

That’s it for tonight, I’m off to bed. Cali es Cali never sleeps:

Yet Another Cali es Cali Babe
