Under the Sea

BioShock has gotten a lot of raves on various gaming sites this week. The game is not released until next week, but the demo is available on XBOX Live.

BioShock is a First Person Shooter (FPS) and in the days when most of my spare time was used for computer games, FPS games were among the ones I played the most. I have been through Wolfenstein 3D, all the Doom, Quake and Half-Life games and a few other titles. I especially remember me and Hallvard having some good times in cooperative mode in Quake 2. I’m a terrible loser when it comes to gaming and the only way he was able to get me to play with him was if we played in cooperative mode. When playing against Hallvard he beat me nine out of ten times and in Counter-Strike he easily took on both me and Terje. I’m sure Hallvard could’ve been a pro gamer if he’d not started snowboarding too.

The Half-Life series of games were and still are some of the best games I’ve ever completed. In the beginning of October EA Games will release Valve Software’s Half-Life 2: The Orange Box - a real gamer’s gem. The box contains Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and the new Half-Life: Episode 2 and Portal and Team Fortress 2. What more can a gamer ask for!? Not much. We’ve been waiting for Team Fortress 2 for as long as I can remember. I’m a bit disappointed that Valve has decided to turn the game into a comedy FPS, but perhaps it works out better than I fear.

Right now I don’t have a high-end PC to play games on and I probably never will ever again because the Xbox 360 covers all my gaming needs. I don’t really enjoy FPS games on the console because of the lack of the good old WASD keys and the accuracy of the mouse. There are adapters that enable you to connect a keyboard and a mouse to the Xbox, but it’s really not that important to me. Still I do enjoy the odd round of BattleField 2.

This entry was supposed to be about BioShock, but I started rambling again. Long story short; I downloaded and played through the demo, the creators do a hell of a job creating an incredible atmosphere based on an intriguing story line. I can totally understand the great reviews the game has gotten, but I for one won’t buy it. BioShock resembles a horror movie in many ways, and I just can’t stand horror movies. I simply hate getting scared half to death, and tend to prefer the thriller-action theme of the Half-Life series.

I like my First Person Shooters with a little more ambient light, thank you very much.
